Dear Black Women Reversing PCOS,

We are living our lives day to day, just trying to cope and manage and often not taking note of when we are not feeling our best. We just adjust and keep going, ignoring our symptoms and what our bodies are trying to tell us.

They are telling us that something is not right.

PCOS is one of the most common hormonal conditions, yet it still does go undiagnosed in so many. Which is tragic, because there is so much we can do about it. There is even a pathway that leads to absolutely reversing PCOS and helps us heal from the ongoing damage that has been done on a mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual level - sometimes for many generations. We can heal and we can reverse PCOS.

Some estimates suggest that that figure could be as many as three in four who remain undiagnosed due to the lack of awareness of the symptoms.

We are aware of the most common symptoms of PCOS, like missed periods due to a lack of ovulation, unwanted hair growth (hirsutism), cystic acne and hair loss/thinning. PCOS is can span wide and not every individual will display every possible symptom. Symptoms can also range from mild to severe.

However, we need to look past those hallmark symptoms and look deeper into those "hidden" or less tangible symptoms that affect the quality of our daily lives. Because PCOS can look so different from person to person, this often leads to “hidden” symptoms that are less well-known and harder to pick up on.

The "hidden" symptoms of PCOS

These hidden symptoms can include excessive daytime sleepiness, breathing problems like sleep apnea and snoring, darkened skin on the back of the neck, underarms, and groin. And even psychological symptoms such as heightened depression and anxiety. You might be starting to see through reading this blog or being in our Facebook Community for Black Women Reversing PCOS, that PCOS is a very complex and misunderstood condition, that needs increased awareness. We need to break down misconceptions and one-size-fits-all thinking and treatment so that those with PCOS can get the appropriate treatment and support. We need to shift our perspective not only from symptom management to reversal, but also the level of self-care we are willing to center in our lives. We have to stop accepting living with this amount of discomfort.

Living with Brain Fog

One critical symptom of PCOS, that often gets overlooked, is BRAIN FOG. Most women are shocked yet feel relief to know, it is not all in their heads. Yes, brain fog is a real symptom of PCOS and you are not crazy. This may show up as difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, confusion. Brain fog could very well be a symptom of inflammation. Most women with PCOS have chronic to severe issues with systemic inflammation. For some this could be THE root cause of their symptoms and for others it is a contributing driver that is secondary to the main root cause.

So, we need to make sure that we are doing all that we can to combat inflammation within our bodies.

So, we struggle with brain fog for a few reasons:

  • Unstable blood sugars
  • Sleep disorders or not enough sleep
  • Low grade inflammations

It’s important that we get a better understanding of what’s actually normal, and the common experiences we’ve accepted as normal. People with PCOS need more support to deal with the emotional toll of the condition on their lives. We deserve more specialized care with reversal at the forefront of all treatment decisions. Being prescribed birth control and being told to lose weight is just NOT enough and it NOT effective either. Treatment must be individual and based on the actual root cause of your symptoms.
